Åberg's "Summer" most listened to and streamed

When the "Summer in P1" season reaches its goal, veteran Lasse Åberg tops the lists of the year's most listened-to programs. All summer, unknown people have come forward and thanked him for the program, so I had a feeling that it was appreciated, says Lasse Åberg.

It's the fourth time Lasse Åberg is hosting "Summer in P1". This year's program tops the lists of most listened to, most podcasted, and longest listened to programs. However, some critics were less convinced. Svenska Dagbladet, for example, stated that "Åberg is rambling without a purpose".

It makes me think of film director Samuel Goldwyn, who said that "everyone hates what I do, except the audience", says Lasse Åberg.

Largest listener response

In the list of "Summer" programs that generated the most reactions in social media, Lasse Åberg was beaten by listener-host Alva Sparrevik. She took first place with a program about her 16-year-old little brother Lucas, who was murdered in the summer of 2023.

Alva Sparrevik's story took off. Many have been upset over how the Swedish justice system works when something like this happens. Her fine "Summer" had an urgent message, and I'm convinced it will make a difference, says "Summer in P1" program manager Bibi Rödöö to TT.

The campfire that moved

Last year, "Summer" was described as the last media campfire in Sweden with the ability to "unite a nation" in the British The Guardian.

In previous years, the podcast version of this campfire could also be heard on external platforms, but this year, Sveriges Radio chose to offer it exclusively on its own.

Over 3 million have listened at some point during the summer when the programs were broadcast on P1, which is about 200,000 people fewer than last year.

About 1.5 million people have listened to the podcast versions each week – a decrease from last year's approximately 1.7 million.

We expected a certain drop. But we only lost 9 percent of those who listen to the podcast version, says Sofia Wadensjö Karén, program director Sveriges Radio.

She is still satisfied. And a certain part of the drop, she believes, has other reasons:

We should also remember that we had a summer with good weather, major news events, and two strong sports events.
