The German car manufacturer BMW is aiming to start selling hydrogen-powered cars in four years, as an alternative to battery-powered electric cars.

The work on developing fuel cells for the driveline is being done in collaboration with Japanese Toyota Motor.

The plan is to start selling one of BMW's existing models on the market in 2028, but with a hydrogen engine as an alternative.

Currently, there are very few hydrogen cars, whose only emission is water, and the availability of hydrogen stations is limited.

The pioneers in the field among car manufacturers are Toyota, with the Mirai model, and Hyundai Motor, with its Nexo.

Total global sales of hydrogen cars last year amounted to 9,000 vehicles, according to Bloomberg.
