Bobeck: Mom a big part of the medal

Vilma Bobeck and Rebecca Netzler took Olympic Games silver in sailing. They support each other through everything. And for Bobeck, the silver was extra emotional since she lost her mother three years ago. She is a big part of this medal.

The Olympic Games pair has been sailing together for over three years and has racked up fine placings in the World Cup. They have taken World Championship medals three years in a row – silver, gold, silver – and now they have an Olympic Games silver in their bag.

Both have a large group of fans on site, nearly fifty people, who have supported them during the sailing days in Marseille. After the Olympic Games silver, a big celebration is being organized at a restaurant near the marina.

It's incredibly many fine people who have made it here, from Norrland, Luleå, Germany – from all over. It's actually incredible how many have come here and stood and cheered in the heat of the sun every day, says 26-year-old Vilma Bobeck.

Praises her mother

But since 2021, her mother Madeleine has been missing from her life after passing away from a brain tumor. A tear appears when the question comes up. Now the Swede praises her mother and dedicates the silver to her.

She is a big part of this medal.

I have the rest of my family here. My big sister and my dad are on site, they mean incredibly much to me, she says.

Big sister Kristin Bobeck says that both mom and dad traveled with Vilma to all sailing competitions when she was little, all over the country.

We stood very close to our mom, both me and my little sister, and still do today even though she's no longer with us. So she has a huge part in this medal.

Received a lot of love

The Swedish sailing pair says they can barely open their phone and go on social media since they've been flooded with so many fine comments. Even 29-year-old Netzler looks taken aback by all the support.

Her little sister Frida Olofsson says it's crazy that her sister took an Olympic Games medal.

Completely insane, so close to gold.

How the investment will look towards a potential new Olympic Games in four years in Los Angeles is unclear right now. It's tough to make an Olympic Games investment, says Bobeck. But it's not the Swedes' primary focus on a day like this. Now it's time to celebrate.

We're going to celebrate all night with everyone in the fan club, says Rebecca Netzler.
