During June and July, 36 deviations occurred within youth care, compared to 50 during the same period in 2023. The figures refer to children and young people placed with the support of the Care of Young Persons Act (LVU) within Sis, the authority writes in a press release.

No deviations have been reported regarding convicted individuals within closed youth care since May 2023.

During June-July, 40 incidents of threats and violence between children and young people were registered. The corresponding figure last year was 96. The number of incidents of threats and violence against employees decreased from 356 last year's summer months to 257 this year.

"It is gratifying to see an even clearer effect of the comprehensive work we are doing to strengthen security", says Sis security director Christer Johansson in a press release.

In August, Sis went into crisis mode due to the dramatic increase in the number of young people being sentenced. The Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions (SKR) previously sounded the alarm this summer about the acute shortage of places, and warned that people in queues may commit serious violent crimes. The government then called an emergency meeting with SKR and Sis.

In a debate article in Aftonbladet, Minister of Justice Gunnar Strömmer and Minister of Social Affairs Camilla Waltersson Grönvall have given complementary assignments to Sis.

Earlier, the government has initiated a total review of the assignment, and begun establishing youth prisons. Now, Sis is also tasked with collaborating with municipalities, regions, SKR, and the Swedish Association of Care Providers to free up more places.

Even places intended for adults, taken into care due to substance abuse, will be converted into places for children and young people taken into care due to criminality.
