Continuing with Parmesan Chips – Despite Sales Ban

Farmchips will continue to sell bags with the designation parmesan chips, despite the fact that Laholm municipality has made a decision on an immediate sales ban and threatens with a fine of 5,000 kronor per bag, reports Göteborgs-Posten.

The background to the sales ban is that parmesan has a protected designation of origin. The municipality refers to the fact that the company has not been able to show any permit to use the name parmesan. According to the decision, only chips that are already in stores may be sold.

But Henrik Strinning, CEO of Premium Snacks Nordic, which is behind Farmchips, believes that the municipality has misunderstood the law.

It is not proportionate or reasonable for an authority to issue a sales ban when it is not about health, but about a product's brand, he says to the newspaper.

The municipality's decision will be appealed, he states.
