Criticism of efforts during snow chaos and oil spill

Both in the snow chaos on E22 in Skåne and after the oil spill off the coast of Blekinge, the authorities acted too slowly and inefficiently, according to a new report from the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB), reports SR Ekot.

A major problem is that one does not always act in time due to fear of making mistakes, says MSB's Director-General Charlotte Petri Gornitzka to the radio.

If they had been even more extensive, the consequences would have been serious, she says.

It is on behalf of the government that MSB has reviewed the efforts during three severe societal crises that have affected Sweden in the past year.

The work after the landslide on E6 in Stenungsund has largely worked well, but not during the snowstorm on E22 in January and after the discharge from the passenger ferry Marco Polo, which ran aground off the coast of Blekinge last autumn.

According to MSB, the authorities must practice and learn more about their and others' roles and responsibilities. The agency also proposes a new principle of action in Swedish crisis management, with clearer requirements for early action.

To demand that we, with incomplete information, as it can be in crises, dare to act and make decisions, says Charlotte Petri Gornitzka.
