Rory McIlroy was agonisingly close to taking his first major win in ten years – but two putt misses ruined it for the star.
Instead, American Bryson DeChambeau took home the win in the US Open.
Ludvig Åberg finished in 12th place after a tough final round.
Rory McIlroy suffered a rarely seen collapse during the final stages of the final round of the major tournament, the US Open.
The world number two played well during the initial 14 holes, slowly but surely eating into Bryson DeChambeau's lead. Going into the final stretch, McIlroy had put himself in a good position to take his first major in ten years.
But then the putter, to put it mildly, started to malfunction.
Double putt misses
After a bogey on the 15th hole, the 35-year-old had an 80-centimetre-long putt on the 16th, which he missed, making another bogey.
But the most painful miss came on the 18th and final hole.
McIlroy missed yet another very short par putt, and made three bogeys on the last four holes. Instead, Bryson DeChambeau was able to take advantage of the situation and take his second US Open win in his career. The American finished on six under par overall, one stroke ahead of McIlroy.
Shortly after the final result was confirmed, McIlroy jumped into his car and left the golf course in Pinehurst, North Carolina, behind him without answering questions from journalists on site.
Åberg faltered
The winner, on the other hand, was over the moon, celebrating wildly after sinking the final putt.
I really wanted this (win), said the American after capturing the title.
McIlroy's collapse means his major drought continues. He has not won any of golf's biggest titles since the PGA Championship in 2014.
As for Ludvig Åberg, the final round was reminiscent of the previous one. Here, too, he made a triple bogey and eventually finished in 12th place.
The fourth round saw him go around in 73 strokes, three over par, and overall, the Swede finished on 281 strokes.
The 24-year-old from Eslöv led the tournament after the first two rounds but slipped back during the third round.
