Fewer Cyber Attacks After NATO Membership

The number of cyber attacks and influence campaigns directed at Sweden has decreased after joining Nato. This assessment is made by several security experts who have spoken to Sweden Radio Ekot.

Several experts were worried that NATO membership would increase the number of cyberattacks against Sweden, but in reality, it has been the opposite. Even though Sweden is still exposed to attacks believed to originate from foreign powers, there are fewer than before joining NATO.

Maybe it was more important for them to influence our decision around NATO than trying to make us feel stupid for joining NATO, says Marcus Murray, cybersecurity expert at Truesec, to Ekot.

According to the Agency for Psychological Defence (APD), the number of influence campaigns noted earlier, for example, in connection with Quran burnings, has also decreased.

Iran has previously been pointed out as responsible for cyberattacks against Swedish interests, but since Sweden extradited the life-sentenced Iranian Hamid Noury to Iran, APD has noted significantly fewer attacks, says Deputy Director-General Mikael Tofvesson to Ekot.
