Funeral procession for Haniya underway in Tehran

A funeral procession for Ismail Haniya is underway in Tehran, after the Hamas leader's death in an assassination attempt yesterday. Haniya will then be buried in Qatar. The USA is once again urging all parties to "cease escalating actions".

Iran's leader Ali Khamenei and Masoud Pezeshkian bowed over Haniya's coffin to pray, shows a state TV broadcast from the university area in the capital. The coffin was then placed on a truck for transportation through the city.

The attack has sparked new fears of a major war in the Middle East. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is on a trip to Mongolia, and is trying to calm the situation.

Peace begins with a ceasefire (in the Gaza War), and to get there, all parties must talk and stop escalating actions, he says according to news agencies.

Nighttime Projectile

According to Iranian reports, Haniya was killed in an air strike. A projectile, according to some sources fired from another country, is said to have hit his residence in Tehran at 02, local time, on Wednesday night.

Hamas has described it as Haniya dying "in an attack by Zionists" and has vowed revenge. Israel's leadership made a Facebook post on Wednesday that signaled the country was behind it, but the post was later removed.

"Will Pay the Price"

In a longer statement made by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday evening, only other targeted attacks carried out by the country recently are mentioned.

Three weeks ago, we attacked Hamas's chief of staff Muhammad Dayf. Two weeks ago, we attacked the Houthis (in Yemen).

And yesterday, we attacked Hezbollah's chief of staff Fuad Shukr (in Lebanon).

Haniya is not mentioned at all, but Netanyahu continues:

We finished off with Fuad Shukr, just like with everyone who attacks us. Whoever slaughters our children, whoever murders our citizens, whoever attacks our country, will pay the price.
