Golf star Rory McIlroy was agonisingly close to taking his first major win in ten years – but a rarely seen collapse ruined his US Open.

Now he's announcing that he's taking a few weeks' competition break.

World number two McIlroy looked set to have the win in the bag at the weekend's major tournament, the US Open – then came two massive mistakes that ruined the weekend for the Northern Irishman.

Instead, it was Bryson DeChambeau who was able to take the win, and shortly after the final result was confirmed, McIlroy jumped into his car and left the golf course in Pinehurst, North Carolina, behind him without answering questions from journalists on site.

Now McIlroy is speaking out on X, where he, among other things, congratulates DeChambeau on his win. He's also announcing that he'll be taking a few weeks' break.

"Yesterday (Sunday) was a tough day, probably the toughest I've had in my nearly 17 years as a professional golfer," McIlroy writes on X and continues:

"I'm going to take a few weeks' break to process everything that's happened."

The star writes that he'll be back to play the Scottish Open, a tournament that takes place from 11-14 July.
