Got the Olympics message from Sweden: "Completely crazy"

Axelina Johansson was torn between disappointment and joy. In the end, she landed in euphoria – after receiving a late message from her family in Sweden. It's completely crazy, says the shot putter after securing a spot in the Olympic Games final together with Fanny Roos.

The Swede did not achieve any longer throws at Stade de France on the outskirts of Paris.

At best, she reached 18.16 meters.

After throwing her three shots, she sat down on the bench and started calculating where she stood in the total.

I checked the scoreboard and then I was seventh, and in the other group, there were five who were better. In Raven Saunders' final throw, I thought she had done shorter earlier and went past me.

Thought she had missed the final

According to the 24-year-old's calculations, she was in 13th place and just outside the final.

Then she received a different message from her family in Sweden.

They had gotten a link and were connected, I saw them on TV and could talk to them. They were super happy and just screamed: "Congratulations"."

Johansson doubted her family's message and asked: Are you sure?

The answer was positive.

The Olympic debutant's low 18 meters were enough to snatch the 12th and final spot, and thus she will get to fight for medals on Friday.

I'm super happy, she says.

It has been a goal for so long, to reach the Olympic final, and you've been loading up for years for this.

There, Axelina Johansson will have blue and yellow company.

Roos to the final

Fanny Roos, 29 years old, reached 18.17 – one centimeter longer than Johansson – and is in her second Olympic final.

I'm super pleased, it's going to be super fun, she says.

It was a nice competition, I'm clearly not satisfied with my result, but today it was about being top twelve – and I was.

The American double World Championship gold medalist Chase Jackson, Eugene 2022 and Budapest 2023, did not get to throw at all. She reached a maximum of 17.60 meters and missed the final.
