Guide: Can Ståhl Defend Olympic Gold?

He is both the reigning Olympic champion and World Champion. But the question is whether a out-of-form Daniel Ståhl can defend his Olympic gold in discus? Tonight, the table tennis players are also playing a historic Olympic semi-final. Here's what you need to know ahead of today's Olympic competitions.

Four Highlights

+ Ståhl defends OS gold after weak qualifying

Daniel Ståhl did not impress in Monday's qualifying in the men's discus. The 31-year-old advanced as eighth among the twelve finalists with a throw of 65.16 meters. However, as the reigning Olympic champion (Tokyo 2021) and World Champion (Budapest 2023), he should not be counted out in the final, which begins at 20.25. Mykolas Alekna, Lithuania, who threw a world record (74.35) this year and threw the farthest in qualifying (67.47), is the favorite. The 21-year-old is the son of discus legend Virgilijus Alekna, who won two Olympic golds, two World Championship golds, and one European Championship gold in the 2000s.

+ Nightmare quarterfinal for handball men

An Olympic silver curse – four lost finals (1992, 1996, 2000, 2012) – hangs over the Swedish men's handball team. The question is whether Sweden, fourth and last team to advance to the quarterfinals from Group B, can even make it to a medal match in France when the tournament moves from Paris to Lille. Tonight's quarterfinal at 17.30 pits them against reigning World Champions Denmark, who won Group A. The last time the teams met in a championship was in the intermediate round of the European Championship in January, when Denmark won 28–27.

+ New sailing medal in Marseille?

There are medal sailings in both mixed classes, Nacra 17 and 470, on the French Riviera, starting at 14.43 and 15.43 according to the preliminary competition schedule. The 470 two-man yacht with Anton Dahlberg and Lovisa Karlsson has the best chance, lying in fourth place ahead of the conclusion. The Nacra 17 catamaran with Emil Järudd and Hanna Jonsson lies in ninth place. Last week, Vilma Bobeck and Rebecca Netzler won Sweden's only sailing medal so far in the Olympic Games: a silver in the 49er FX.

+ Table tennis men play OS semifinal

After Truls Möregårdh's unexpected Olympic silver in the singles, the Swedish men are now clear for the Olympic semifinal. On Tuesday evening, they defeated second-seeded Germany 3–0 in matches in the quarterfinal and it is the first time Sweden has played an Olympic semifinal in the team event, which was introduced to the program in 2008. They will face Japan tonight at 20.00.

+ Swedish women challenge American stars

There was no Olympic medal for either Ludvig Åberg or Alex Norén in men's Olympic golf last week. Can Maja Stark and Linn Grant surprise and play their way into a medal this week? Or two? The Swedish women are ranked 23rd and 25th in the world and will try to challenge, among others, American stars Nelly Korda and Lilia Vu, ranked first and second, on the Le Golf National course outside Paris. Grant is the first of the Swedish women to tee off in the first round at 10.22. Stark goes out at 12.06.
