Those who know their sports history don't scatter with the epithet "Dream Team", which the USA's basketball men were called when NBA pros first participated in an Olympic Games in Barcelona 1992. Since then, the USA has only missed the gold once (Athens 2004, when Argentina won) and, just like the last 30 years, the team is a huge favorite in Paris too. It's impossible to call the team anything but a dream team, even if the narrow 101–100 win against South Sudan in the Olympic rehearsal has raised question marks. 39-year-old legend and Olympic flag-bearer LeBron James makes his first Olympic appearance since the London 2012 Games. This will be his fourth Olympic Games and possibly his last. He's accompanied by veterans Kevin Durant, with three Olympic golds, and Stephen Curry, who's making his Olympic debut, as well as star coach Steve Kerr. Eight years after the gold in Rio de Janeiro and three years after the 14th place in Tokyo, 30-year-old Jenny Rissveds from Falun is back at an Olympic Games. In recent years, she's been away from professional cycling for periods due to various reasons: mental health issues, sponsor disputes, crashes, and injuries. Ahead of the Olympics, she's ranked 12th in the world individually after winning the World Cup premiere in Brazil in April. At 14.10, she'll make her third Olympic start.

Gymnastics superstar Simone Biles makes her first competition in Paris in the women's individual qualification with the start during the morning. The 27-year-old, who took four Olympic golds and one bronze in Rio de Janeiro 2016, withdrew from the Olympics in Tokyo last time to focus on her mental health. The 27-year-old was away from the big sports scene for a while before she was back at the World Championships in Antwerp last year – and took four golds and one silver.
