18-year-old Tara Babulfath can take Sweden's first Olympic medal in Paris, in the 48-kilo judo class. In the spring, she took World Championship bronze and has previously won several international championship medals at the U18 level. Olympic debutant and the youngest of all judokas in Paris.

David Åhman and Jonatan Hellvig have impressed on the world tour this year and racked up titles. Ahead of the summer games in Paris, the 22-year-olds are ranked as world number seven. Their first group stage opponents on the court at the Eiffel Tower are Australians Mark Nicolaidis and Izac Carracher.

Under Norwegian coach Glenn Solberg's leadership, the handball men have taken both European Championship gold (2022) and World Championship silver (2021). In the Olympics, the national team has a silver curse with four lost finals (1992, 1996, 2000, 2012) and still no gold. In the premiere, Sweden, which was eliminated in the Olympic quarterfinals in Tokyo last time, faces Germany.

Victor Wembanyama was chosen as number one in the NBA draft last year and averaged over 29 minutes and 21 points per game for bottom team San Antonio Spurs in his debut season. The Olympic debutant has now come home to lead France to a historic first basketball gold after silver in Tokyo three years ago. In the premiere, Brazil awaits.

On Thursday, worrying reports emerged that tennis legend Rafael Nadal had been hit by new injury problems. On Friday, he was back on the Roland Garros clay, preparing for the Olympic doubles with new Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz. The unseeded Spanish pair faces the sixth-seeded Argentinians Máximo González and Andrés Molteni on the center court.
