Over 560,000 inhabitants in Yemen have been affected by unprecedented floods in the country on the Arabian Peninsula. This is reported by the UN's migration agency IOM, which is appealing for international support equivalent to 130 million kronor in acute aid to the affected population.
"The extent of the destruction is enormous, and we must immediately get additional economic assistance to avoid leaving the most vulnerable behind," says Matt Huber, who is IOM's chief in Yemen.
Unusually heavy rainfall and subsequent flooding have been ongoing since the end of July. This has led to acute problems in Yemen, which is one of the world's poorest countries and has been severely affected by internal conflicts.
IOM also warns that the bad weather will continue to affect Yemen in the coming weeks.
