Julien Alfred from Saint Lucia won the Olympic Games final in the women's 100 meters at Stade de France in Paris.
The 23-year-old ran in a time of 10.72, a new national record. Before the final, Alfred had never previously taken a medal in a major athletics championship at the distance. The gold medal was the West Indian island nation's first ever in an Olympic Games.
Favourite Sha'Carri Richardson took silver after crossing the finish line 15 hundredths behind Alfred. A small revenge since Richardson missed the Olympic Games in Tokyo after testing positive for cannabis. Melissa Jefferson secured an American medal double in the 100-meter sprint after taking bronze.
Jamaican sprint legend Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, who has taken a medal in the distance in four consecutive Olympic Games, did not start in the semifinal and missed the final.
