Rental apartments full of mold, bed bugs, and moisture damage, 85 of the country's municipalities testify to problems with unscrupulous landlords, a survey from Hem & Hyra and SVT Nyheter shows. This means that every third of the 261 municipalities that responded to the survey are affected.
Together, the municipalities point out over a hundred landlords who ignore the municipality's requirements and continue to rent out properties despite serious problems.
Tenants are forced to live in apartments with ventilation that does not work, mold that spreads, or with water temperatures that are too low, where legionella bacteria risk spreading.
Often, the problems persist for several years without the identified landlords taking action.
The municipalities that have been affected are located throughout large parts of Sweden, both in rural areas and in major cities. Among the affected are smaller municipalities such as Vingåker and Ludvika, but also the country's five largest cities: Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö, Uppsala, and Linköping.
