At least a dozen people have died in floods and landslides in Nepal. Several people are still missing as houses and roads are underwater.
Parts of the mountainous country have been plagued by extreme rainfall since Thursday. The authorities have warned of floods in several major rivers.
The summer monsoon rains always hit the country hard, but the number of deadly floods has increased in recent years – according to experts due to climate change in combination with an increasing number of large road constructions. As recently as June, at least 14 people died in Nepal when strong storms led to landslides, lightning, and floods.
Floods in recent days have also caused extensive damage in the northern parts of neighboring India and Bangladesh, affecting millions of people.
