While Olympic participants are competing for gold in Paris this summer, a major exhibition on the significance and role of horses in society will be on display at the Palace of Versailles.

The National Museum in Stockholm has lent 19 works to the exhibition, which totals nearly 300 works. Among the Swedish loans are several horse portraits signed by David Klöcker Ehrenstrahl from Karl XI's collection.

"We are delighted to be able to contribute several prominent works from our collections to such a major and significant exhibition about horses. It's especially exciting that the exhibition is being held at Versailles, which is the hub of equestrian sport during the Olympics. We also wish the Swedish competitors good luck," says Patrick Amsellem, Director-General of the National Museum, in a press release.

The exhibition "Horse in majesty – At the heart of a civilisation" will be on display at Versailles from 2 July to 3 November 2024.
