Lowest Population Growth in Sweden in the 2000s

During the first half of 2024, the population increased by 1,600 people. This is the longest population increase measured in Sweden during a half-year period in the 2000s, according to SCB.

The population in Sweden has steadily increased over the past decades. As a comparison, the number of Swedes increased by over 50,000 per year between 2016 and 2019. In 2023, we became almost 25,000 more Swedes.

Now, the population growth is slowing down.

During the first six months of the year, 50,500 children were born in Sweden, the lowest number of births in the first half of the year in 21 years. The decrease compared to the same period last year is two percent.

"In recent years and the first half of 2024, fewer children have been born than in previous years, but the low population growth in 2024 is mainly due to the fact that the number of people registered as emigrants has increased", says Ann-Marie Persson, population statistician at SCB, in a press release.

During the first half of the year, 44,100 people emigrated, according to SCB's statistics. This is almost a doubling compared to the year before.

SCB notes that the high figure regarding emigration is largely due to changed administrative routines at the Tax Agency, which has launched a project to improve population registration and has been able to deregister people who no longer reside in Sweden.
