In the 100 highest-grossing bio films of 2023, 32 percent of the roles were played by women or girls, according to the annual report Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, released on Monday. This is almost the same level as in 2007, when 30 percent of the roles were held by women.
30 percent of the leading roles in top films were played by women, a decrease of 14 percent compared to 2022.
"However you look at the figures, they show that 2023 was not the year for women," says a spokesperson for the analysis company.
On the other hand, minorities got more space on the screen. The number of "white" roles decreased from 62 percent in 2022 to 56 percent in 2023. Of last year's leading roles, 12.6 percent were played by blacks, 5.2 percent by South Americans, and 18.4 percent by Asians.
Five of the 100 largest bio films had an LGBTQI role, and four roles were non-binary, according to the report.
The Annenberg Inclusion Initiative measures the representation of gender and ethnicity among, among others, actors, artists, and producers on an annual basis.
