A 45-year-old man who was sentenced to death for drug smuggling has been hanged in Changi prison in Singapore, announces the country's drug agency CNB.
The man was convicted in 2019 for smuggling 36.9 grams of heroin, more than the double amount that carries the death penalty in the country. The man's request for clemency has been rejected.
This is the second time the death penalty has been carried out in Singapore this year. In February, a 35-year-old man from Bangladesh was hanged for murder. Since the country resumed carrying out the death penalty in March 2022, 18 people have been hanged.
The UN and human rights groups criticize the country, claiming that the death penalty has no deterrent effect. Singapore's authorities, on the other hand, argue that it has contributed to making the country one of Asia's safest.
