The 37-year-old is therefore not selected in Argentina's squad for the World Championship qualifiers at the beginning of September.
Messi has missed all five matches of his club team Inter Miami since returning from the South American championships.
Argentina won the championship as reigning champions earlier this summer. Messi contributed with a goal and an assist in five matches with the captain's armband on his arm.
Argentina will face Chile on September 5 and Colombia on September 10 in the World Championship qualifiers.
