Mom Åhman: "He'll get loads of chocolate balls"

Sofia Åhman had promised chocolate balls for an Olympic Games gold for her son David and Jonatan Hellvig. And chocolate balls it will be after the final victory against the Germans Nils Ehlers and Clemens Wickler. Loads, says mom Åhman.

With Swedish flags in their hair and Swedish flags painted on their cheeks, the training expert – known from the program Hemmagympa with Sofia – was taken during the award ceremony when David Åhman and Jonatan Hellvig bowed their heads and received their gold medals.

Shortly afterwards, the big hug party awaited in one of the corners of Arena Champ-de-Mars. There, the families, friends, and many Swedish supporters of the gold heroes followed the final.

They sang along and danced to "Sweet Caroline" and "Imagine" – and of course joined in when Åhman and Hellvig started their victory dance with coaches Rasmus Jonsson and Anders Kristiansson.

"Have been so nervous"

Now it's just pure joy, actually. It's been a super-long tournament and you've been up and down and you've been so nervous.

I think I need a vacation after this, says Sofia Åhman and laughs.

The final didn't start until 22.30. It was a long Saturday waiting for the match and whether it would be gold or silver.

Yes, that's what it is. You go and wait all day and can't really relax.

It was a bit easier than earlier matches, this one wasn't as terrible. Now we knew we'd get a medal, but damn how nervous you get anyway, says Sofia Öhman.

"Really do their job"

What makes these guys so successful?

They're meticulous and train a lot and never cheat. They believe in themselves and have good coaches. They really do their job, I'd like to say.

And they have talent, of course.

The tournament started shakily and Åhman and Hellvig lived dangerously.

Absolute. I think it was a bit of a shock when they got in. The Olympic Games are the Olympic Games, after all, something they'd never done before. But then they could start trusting their game and getting into their bubble, and then they're fantastic.

How will you celebrate?

There will be chocolate balls, at least, maybe not tonight but as soon as possible. David loves chocolate balls, so it has to be chocolate balls in abundance.
