Swedish table tennis star Truls Möregårdh did exactly what he was supposed to in his opening singles match at the Olympics.
Möregårdh swept aside Belgian Cedric Nuytinck in four straight sets (11–4, 11–9, 11–9, 11–4) – but already in his next match, in the round of 16, it will get tougher for the Swede.
Then he will face the Chinese world number one Wang Chuqin, assuming nothing completely unexpected happens in his opening Olympic match.
Maximum upset, said Möregårdh when the draw was made earlier in the week.
Earlier on Saturday, the Swedish mixed doubles team also advanced to the quarterfinals as planned.
The Swedish duo Kristian Karlsson and Christina Källberg were favorites in the round of 16 against Cuba's Jorge Campos and Daniela Fonseca, but the game didn't go according to plan for the Swedes initially, and it was Cuba that comfortably took the first set 11–6.
After a closely contested second set, which Sweden eventually won 12–10, Karlsson and Källberg took over the match more and more and could turn it around to win 4–1 in sets.
In the quarterfinals, the North Korean duo Ri Jong Sik and Kim Kum-Yong await.
