Some of the world's largest record companies are suing AI firms Suno and Udio for copyright infringement, reports BBC. Music giants Sony Music, Universal Music Group and Warner Records are all behind the lawsuits, which were made public on Monday.

They claim that the AI companies have committed copyright infringement "on a nearly unimaginable scale" and accuse them of using programmes that steal music, which AI then learns to emulate.

The companies are accused of having used music by, among others, Mariah Carey and Chuck Berry, reports The Guardian. The record companies now want them to pay compensation sums of 150,000 dollars per work, according to the two lawsuits filed in Boston and New York in the USA.

Suno's CEO, Mikey Shulman, says according to The Guardian that their services are used to create new works, and not to copy existing music content. Udio has yet to respond to the allegations.
