New SR Cuts May Affect Research

Swedish Radio's Administration, SRF, is to save 16 million kronor per year, reports the newspaper Journalisten. Twenty people have been notified, but how many will have to be laid off is unclear.

At SRF, around 60 employees work in areas such as health care, telephone and switchboard services, research, library, and archives.

The cutbacks mean, among other things, that the telephone switchboard will no longer be staffed around the clock, but only during office hours, according to Journalisten. The owners, the broadcasting companies SR, SVT, and UR, will also no longer have a joint research department and library.

This is a total cultural darkness, says Louise Epstein, program host on P1, to the newspaper.

According to Charlotta Friberg, head of SR's national division, the idea is to try to keep a library operation.

A more cost-effective solution must be found, since we are a company. We have made the assessment that we still have a need for the library department and research. The extent to which we can have it will be investigated.

As recently as January, 100 employees at Sveriges Radio were given notice.
