New guidelines for travel to mpox-affected areas

The Public Health Agency (PHA) has issued new recommendations for travel to or from areas with high spread of the disease mpox.

"If you have been in an area with ongoing spread of mpox, be aware of clear symptoms of mpox, such as painful blisters and sores. Be aware of symptoms for three weeks after you have returned home", is one of the Public Health Agency's recommendations, which the authority lists on its website.

Those who have had close contact with a person suspected of having mpox should also contact healthcare for advice, regardless of symptoms.

"By 'close contact' is meant, for example, having lived with someone for a period of time. But sexual contacts are also included", says Magnus Gisslén, state epidemiologist, on the website.

The Public Health Agency also lists a number of recommendations for those who are planning to travel to an area where the spread is ongoing. Among other things, people are asked to avoid new sexual contacts in such areas.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated earlier on Friday to TT that they do not currently advise against travel to countries due to mpox.

The World Health Organization WHO declared an international health emergency earlier in the week due to an ongoing outbreak of the disease in several African countries.

On Thursday, the first case of mpox of the more severe variant was confirmed in Sweden.
