The attack took place at Willelmsplein by Erasmus Bridge, which crosses the New Maas River flowing through the city. According to witnesses and the police, the suspect, who was allegedly armed with two knives, first attacked a person in a parking garage and then another on a terrace at one end of the bridge, on their way from the garage, according to Dutch media. A 32-year-old man was killed and a 33-year-old was seriously injured.
Dutch prosecutors announced in a statement on Friday that the suspected perpetrator, who is 22 years old, is suspected of murder and attempted murder with terrorist motives.
According to witnesses, the suspected perpetrator shouted "Allahu akbar" during the attack. According to a police spokesperson, Wessel Stolle, the police also heard the suspect shout it.
A sports instructor who witnessed the event managed to disarm the man.
