In the first round, 100,000 students are now leaving upper secondary school with more or less good results in their baggage.
But weak or even failed upper secondary school grades do not have to be a catastrophe. Most things can be repaired.
If you have realised that one or more grades need to be improved, there are several paths to take. It can be tricky, so get in touch with a study and career guidance counsellor in your municipality for advice.
Komvux provides the opportunity to read in the upper secondary school courses you need to become eligible for vocational college or university. It can be courses you failed, or courses you need to complete to gain eligibility for a specific education. The basic rule is that you study in your home municipality. There is also the possibility of distance learning and studying at different speeds.
Folk high schools' general course gives you basic eligibility for post-upper-secondary studies. It is also possible to read in special eligibility at a folk high school. Folk high schools are found throughout the country, in large cities and smaller towns. Many have boarding facilities.
A number of universities and colleges have technical/science foundation year or basic terms. These are preparatory programmes adapted for those who want to study, for example, engineering, physiotherapy or forestry, and have basic eligibility but need to complete the upper secondary school courses required. The point of the foundation year is that it provides a good introduction to university studies and often guarantees a place on the intended university programme.
If you already have eligibility but want to improve one or more course grades, you can take a test. You study the course entirely on your own, take a final exam and get – hopefully – a higher grade. A fee is charged for the test (500 kronor per course). Contact adult education for more information.
Many choose to take the Swedish Scholastic Aptitude Test, since a good result increases the chances of getting into a sought-after education. The test is held twice a year, and the application fee is 550 kronor. Important: Eligibility must still be proven with grades.
For an upper secondary school diploma from a university preparatory programme, you need
2,500 points, of which 2,250 must be passed (at least E)
passed in Swedish or Swedish as a second language 1, 2 and 3, English 5 and 6, and mathematics 1, as well as
a passed upper secondary school project
A diploma from a university preparatory programme gives basic eligibility for university studies.
A diploma from a vocational programme requires
2,500 points, of which 2,250 must be passed
passed in Swedish or Swedish as a second language 1, English 5, and mathematics 1
passed in 400 points of the programme-specific subjects (e.g. building and construction on the building programme)
a passed upper secondary school project.
A vocational diploma with a passed grade (at least E) in Swedish/Swedish as a second language 2 and 3, and in English 6, also gives basic eligibility for university studies. These courses are included in all vocational programmes.
Many university programmes also require special eligibility, i.e. passed grades in additional courses.
