The Swedish Teachers' Union will provide legal assistance and support to those who violate a potential new law on information duty.

A so-called "informant law" would mean that teachers need to report, for example, undocumented students.

The proposal violates the Convention on the Rights of the Child, which is Swedish law, says Chairperson Anna Olskog to the union newspaper We Teachers.

The government is investigating a duty for municipalities and authorities to sound the alarm if they come into contact with individuals who are residing illegally in Sweden. The purpose is to combat a growing shadow society. The legislative proposal has been met with criticism from several quarters. Including from The Liberals, one of the governing parties, which wants to see exemptions in the information duty for, among other things, schools.

We urge the government to back down, says Anna Olskog.
