Earlier this year, the central bank believed that 200,000 Ukrainians would leave the country, but now they believe that the figure will instead land on double that – 400,000 people.
The higher emigration is due to the extensive destruction of the Ukrainian energy system, which causes long periods of power outages and creates major problems with heating homes.
Another reason cited is that more Ukrainians are getting used to living abroad, according to the central bank.
Besides the problems with heating homes, the power outages reduce economic activity and labor demand, which further stimulates migration.
The economy has also been hard hit by many young men leaving the country. Some do it illegally to avoid mobilization, although the exact number is difficult to calculate.
