Saved points in the last minute: Can be decisive

Simon Thern saved a crucial point for Värnamo in the relegation battle in Allsvenskan by scoring a goal in the final seconds against Djurgården. One point can be completely decisive in the end, he says.

At the same time as Värnamo received Djurgården, Halmstad played at home against Norrköping. Both Värnamo and Halmstad took one point each – important points in the relegation battle where Halmstad is on a qualifying spot with 24 points and Värnamo is in 12th place with 25.

But IFK Göteborg (24 points) has not played its match in the 25th round of 30.

Kalmar FF remains on the second-to-last place with 22 points, after losing to Elfsborg with 1–3, and last is Västerås with 19 points, although with one match less played.

"Was cool"

Värnamo was on the verge of losing the point when Djurgården scored 1–0 in the 81st minute (Dennis Hümmet). But in the fourth added minute, Värnamo got a chance, which they took.

I flip the ball forward and get to run through (the defense) and was cool, says Simon Thern about the 1–1 goal to Max.

It was nice, of course, but I have mixed feelings, because I think we were so much better than them in the second half. But that we manage to snatch a point here, we'll take with us and work on further. One point can be crucial in the end.

Injury worries

Djurgården remains in second place in the Allsvenskan table behind Malmö FF, but AIK, who won the Stockholm derby over Hammarby, is only one point behind. Hammarby is fourth, another point behind.

More worrying than the table position may be that Djurgården had two players injured – just four days before the Conference League match against Linz. Captain Marcus Danielsson had to leave already after a quarter of an hour after colliding with a Värnamo player. And Jacob Rinne did not return to the pitch after the break due to injury concerns.

On the other hand, Hümmet is not worried about his thigh, despite signaling for a substitution immediately after the goal.

It was mostly for safety's sake, I felt something in my thigh in the first half and it got worse and worse, he says to Max.

Halmstad and Norrköping played a goalless match at Örjans Vall. This meant that Norrköping's 155-match Allsvenskan streak, with goals in every match, was now broken. The last time Norrköping played 0–0 was on July 28, 2019, against IFK Göteborg.
