Senegal has stopped over 250 migrants who have tried to reach Europe by sea. The country's navy stopped a boat with 202 people on board off Senegal's northwestern coast on Friday. The day after, 57 migrants were arrested in the coastal town of Saint Louise.
In early July, 90 migrants died when a boat with 170 people on board capsized off Mauritania's coast.
The accident prompted Senegal's Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko to urge people not to risk their lives in overcrowded boats that are often not seaworthy.
According to the Spanish aid organization Caminando Fronteras, over 5,000 people have died trying to reach Spain by sea, just in the first five months of this year.
