Over 100,000 people may be registered in Sweden despite not being eligible to be.

Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson (The Moderate Party) is surprised by the figure:

It was really a substantial number.

The figure emerges from the national population overview that the Tax Agency submitted to the government on Friday.

This is the first time we have produced such a detailed population basis. The idea is that this basis will serve as a decision basis for the government but also for ourselves, says the Tax Agency's Director-General Katrin Westling Palm at a press conference.

According to the report, between 74,000 and 158,000 people are registered in Sweden despite not being eligible to be.

Our review shows that it is more than we previously assumed, says Palm.

The group poses a significant risk of incorrect payments from the welfare systems.

Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson (The Moderate Party) received the report at a press conference on Friday and also stated that the figure surprised her.

We suspected that it would be many, but it was really a substantial number. Here, there is reason for us on the political side to continue working together with the Tax Agency to reduce this group.
