Ståhl's Olympic seventh place in Paris: "A bit disappointing"

In Tokyo, he won the gold. But in Paris, Daniel Ståhl has to leave empty-handed. It's a bit sad, but seventh place at an Olympic Games is not that bad, really, says the discus star.

Jamaican Rojé Stona won with 70 meters, an Olympic record, ahead of Mykolas Alekna, Lithuania, and Australian Matthew Denny, who threw 69.97 and 69.31 respectively.

Daniel Ståhl?

He was 3.05 meters short of defending his gold from Tokyo 2021.

"Wanted too much"

I wanted too much. I was incredibly loaded and tagged to throw far, says the Swede.

It became too much adrenaline and power. Last year I was more "smooth" and had long movements, and threw far in principle in every competition, even in Budapest. Now it was the opposite.

The 31-year-old came from a modest season compared to last year. Then he had several 70-meter throws and also won the World Championship gold in Budapest with the final throw.

The performance in Hungary also resulted in him being awarded Svenska Dagbladet's gold medal.

Before Paris, the distances have not been as long.

At best, he has reached 68.99, which was in the season's first competition. Since then, he has been in the range of 60.65 to 67.49.

In Paris, Ståhl was sure that he was still capable of reaching 70 meters with the discus.

How did it go?

66.95 meters at most.

It works well in training. I throw 72.5-73 in good wind in Malmö, but it didn't quite come together today.

Why it has become like this just this season, Daniel Ståhl cannot answer.

Aiming for the World Championship and the Olympic Games

Instead, he is focused on getting better technique for next year, when he aims for the World Championship in Japan.

It was the third best competition for the season, and it's just okay that it turned out like this this year, he says.

There are four competitions left, and then it's focus on Tokyo.

At the same time, he is open to doing another Olympic Games in four years.

The goal is Los Angeles. It's "all out" for that.
