Ståhl's response to ex-coach: "He has his opinion"

Former coach Vesteinn Hafsteinsson believes that Daniel Ståhl is finished. The star's response? Everyone can think and believe what they want, he says ahead of Monday's discus qualification at Stade de France.

In an interview with Radiosporten, Vesteinn Hafsteinsson, Ståhl's coach from 2011 to 2023, said that the discus star will have a hard time taking a medal at the Paris Olympic Games.

The reason?

The 31-year-old is a worse thrower.

I experience that Daniel has worse technique and I experience that he has worse speed, thus less speed in the throw and that's what's most important in discus. When I see him throw, I feel that it's empty, said Hafsteinsson in the interview.

"Everyone has opinions"

In the French capital, Ståhl got the chance to respond to his former coach's opinion.

I haven't read, I've only heard a little about that. Everyone has opinions about Olympic champions and World champions. Everyone can think and say what they want. He has his opinion and stands by it, he says.

Ståhl also says that he will enter as an underdog behind, among others, Kristjan Ceh from Slovenia and Mykolas Alekna from Lithuania.

A thought that Ståhl explains by saying that he has fallen in the rankings and not been over 70 meters this season.

Which is a big difference from last year. Then he lined up 70-meter throws and won the World Championship gold in Budapest in a brilliant way.

"Make a bang"

The goal is to make a bang here in Paris and then we'll see how far it goes, he says.

You haven't been over 70 meters this year, how do you think about that?

There have been many competitions around 66, 67 and 68 meters at most in the first competition. I've had a lot of power and eagerness in the technique. I haven't had the timing there. But now at the end, it's felt better.

Do you have 70 meters in you?

I hope so.
