The month of September 2024 will be written into the history books of the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI). A new heat record was set on September 4, when both Lund and Helsingborg measured high summer temperatures, 31.1 degrees. Such high temperatures have never been measured in Sweden during September before, writes the weather authority in a monthly summary.

Several local station records were also set in the north, in places such as Piteå (25.7 degrees), Lycksele (26.2), and Abisko (21.9).

Overall, September was warmer than normal, but cold and frost in the middle of the month pulled down the average. Hoburg on Gotland, on the other hand, appears to be getting its second or third warmest September month since measurements began in 1880.

However, September also brought the season's first measurable snow, and Karesuando measured -9.1 degrees over the weekend, which is the lowest September temperature in the country since 2019.
