On January 1 this year, the reduction obligation was lowered to 6 percent for diesel and gasoline for the period 2024-2026. Now, the government plans to raise it to 10 percent on July 1 next year.

The change is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by at least half a million tons per year, according to SVT.

The ruling parties also plan to further reduce the fuel tax so that the price does not increase.

"The price of gasoline and diesel will not be affected when filling up the car. The state will cover the entire cost. This is more or less just a numerical exercise in the budget," writes the Sweden Democrats in an email to TT.

Before the 2022 election, the price of fuel was a hot topic. The Moderate Party, the Christian Democrats, and the Sweden Democrats all promised a reduction in both gasoline and diesel.

However, the reduction has also been met with criticism since Sweden risks missing the EU's climate goals.

Before the turn of the year, the reduction obligation was 7.8 percent for gasoline and 30.5 percent for diesel. The reduction obligation means that gasoline companies must blend in a certain amount of biofuel to achieve a reduction in transport emissions.
