The Dominican Republic announces that 10,000 migrants from Haiti who are in the neighboring country will be returned – every week. The decision on undocumented Haitians will be implemented immediately, according to the president's spokesperson.
The goal of the operation is to reduce the excess of migrants present in the Dominican Republic.
Spokesperson Homero Figueroa said that the relocations will be carried out "according to strict rules that ensure human rights are respected.
Over 700,000 inhabitants in Haiti are internally displaced, according to the UN's migration agency IOM. Half of them are children. Moreover, the number of those who have had to flee their homes has shown a significant increase since the last measurement in June.
The two countries share a land area on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola.
Haiti is partially lawless, corrupt, and largely controlled by criminal gangs, with poverty that is among the worst in the region and in the world.
