The Football Association must cut back.

The annual January tour of the men's national team is being scrapped from the activities.

Two missed championships – the 2022 World Championship and the ongoing European Championship – in a row for the men have significantly reduced the association's revenue, and a cost-cutting measure was introduced last year.

The generally difficult economic situation also contributes to the need to reduce costs, and as part of this, the January tour is being put on ice for the next few years.

However, the association also gives a sporting aspect to the cutback.

"It has been a classic and much-appreciated gathering over the years, but we note that a number of factors have changed the conditions and see advantages in redirecting resources," says the association's football chief Kim Källström in a statement on the association's website.

A number of national team captains have lifted the tour and given it great value. Many frequently occurring national team players have made their debut on one of the many tours around the world.

"But in today's football with shorter preseasons for our Swedish clubs, with new match dates in upcoming European Cup games, tougher competition for the players' availability, the conditions have changed, and the Swedish Football Association has, after a longer period of consideration, decided not to arrange the January tour anymore," it says on the association's website.
