Famine prevails, cholera has broken out, and over 13 million people have been forced to leave their homes in Sudan, in what is described as the world's current largest refugee crisis. The UN warns that mass starvation can spread in the country.

The government is now directing additional support specifically to Sudan, amounting to 25 million kronor. The funds will go to the UN's refugee agency UNHCR and the International Red Cross Committee's humanitarian efforts.

"The government is increasing Swedish humanitarian aid to help those living under almost impossible conditions in Sudan," says Minister for Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade Benjamin Dousa (M) in a comment.

According to him, the support will contribute to "providing protection and shelter for families and children on the run, medical care for the sick and injured, and evacuating civilians from war zones".

So far this year, Sweden's support to the civilian population in Sudan amounts to 659 million kronor, according to the government.

Earlier in the week, the government announced that Sweden will increase its support for 2024 to various UN agencies by 461 million kronor. Funds that will, among other things, go towards preventing starvation disasters and helping people on the run.
