The Police: 200 Violent Crimes Thwarted in Recent Years

Approximately 200 violent crimes have been prevented in 2023 and 2024 – about 20 of them in June and July this year – according to the police's assessment. This includes, for example, plans to carry out shootings and bombings being stopped, as well as arson attacks.

During the same period, nearly 750 explosions and shootings have occurred, according to police statistics.

The police state in a press release that the circumstances surrounding prevented or thwarted violent crimes vary. A thwarted crime means that the police intervene in close proximity to the commission of a crime, and a prevented violent crime means that the intervention occurs during the planning stage.

An example is when a young person who had previously been involved in violent crime was controlled and the police found weapons and a murder plan on the person's phone. Another example is when assignments to commit violent crimes were revealed during a review of chat messages.

The Police Authority says that they have become faster at collecting, sharing, and analyzing information, as well as detecting patterns and deviations for violent crimes. Crime plans can be uncovered earlier.

"We take no risks when it comes to life. If we see circumstances that indicate imminent violent crime, we act directly," says Johan Olsson, head of the national operational department at the Police Authority, in the press release.
