The shipping company TT-Line is appealing the fee of 1.2 million kronor that the Coast Guard has determined the German shipping company must pay after the oil spill last autumn, reports Sveriges Radio P4 Blekinge.

When the shipping company's passenger ferry Marco Polo ran aground in Blekinge in October last year, approximately 55 tons of oil leaked into Pukaviksbukten near Karlshamn, requiring cleanup along a 2.5-mile long coastal stretch. The Coast Guard has therefore demanded that TT-Line pay a so-called water pollution fee of 1.2 million kronor.

However, the shipping company is appealing the decision and writes to the Maritime Court that they have done everything that can be required to limit the oil spill.

TT-Line has previously stated that a "human navigation error" caused the grounding. The ferry was on its way to Karlshamn when the accident occurred.
