The Taliban risks lawsuit in The Hague

Afghanistan's Taliban government can be brought to the International Court of Justice in The Hague (ICJ) for its treatment of women. This is announced by Australia, Canada, Germany, and the Netherlands, which are jointly initiating the legal proceedings.

She describes the legal initiative, led by Germany, as "unparalleled".

The four countries intend to assert that Afghanistan is neglecting the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, which the country has signed. Wong urges Afghanistan to participate in the negotiations according to the convention.

If the negotiations fail, the dispute may eventually be referred to the ICJ.

The Taliban has implemented a strict interpretation of Islamic law since regaining power in Afghanistan in August 2021, and has increasingly cracked down on women's rights.

Women have been excluded from education after sixth grade and from a wide range of professions. As recently as a couple of weeks ago, they were forbidden from leaving their homes unless "necessary" and from raising their voices outside their own homes.

More than 20 countries issued a statement in connection with the UN summit in New York, supporting the four countries' legal actions against Afghanistan.
