The Taliban want to ban images - "nothing living"

The Taliban regime in Afghanistan intends to gradually introduce a ban on publishing images of living beings in the media – but is still publishing images with people themselves.

The law applies to the whole of Afghanistan... and it will be implemented gradually, says a spokesperson for what the Taliban call the "Department of Moral Enforcement and Prevention of Vice".

People are to be convinced that images of living beings are contrary to Islam, according to spokesperson Saiful Islam Khyber.

The implementation itself will begin in Kandahar and Helmand, he adds, provinces in the south where the Taliban are strong.

Journalists in Kandahar had not received any information about the new law by Monday. In central Ghazni, however, journalists have been advised to, for example, take pictures from a greater distance, in order to "get used to it".

The law also includes a ban on mocking Islam or disputing Islamic law.

So far, the Taliban's own authorities regularly publish images of people on social media and issue press photos with foreign dignitaries.

During the previous Taliban regime from 1996 to 2001, recordings and images of living beings were prohibited.
