Three Iranians are accused by the US Department of Justice of having hacked Donald Trump's presidential campaign and spread stolen information to the media.
The individuals, who were employed by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, are suspected of having attempted to influence the upcoming US presidential election. According to the accusations, they have carried out hacking attacks for several years to gain access to accounts belonging to American government officials and individuals within the political election campaigns.
"There are a few actors in the world who pose a significant threat to US national security, one of them is Iran," says Justice Minister Merrick Garland in a statement.
Several major media outlets, including The New York Times and The Washington Post, have stated that they were offered the classified information stolen from the Trump campaign, but refused to publish it.
