Ukraine has created a national register to document sexual violence allegedly committed by Russian forces. The register has emerged from a pilot project that has already led to five people being convicted in absentia, says Deputy Prosecutor General Viktorija Litvinova to AP.
Previously, we had to visit territories where hostilities were taking place. But now, people – individuals who have experienced sexual assaults – are seeking us out for information.
So far, 303 cases of conflict-related sexual violence have been registered since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. In 112 of the cases, the victims were men and in 191 cases women. Some victims have been subjected to multiple assaults, according to Viktorija Litvinova.
