The world number one Jannik Sinner withdraws from the tennis tournament in the OS due to tonsillitis.

The Italian writes on X that doctors "strongly advised" him not to play on the clay in Paris.

"Missing the games is a great disappointment since it was one of my main goals this season. I couldn't wait to get the honor of representing my country in this very important competition", writes Sinner.

The Italian was one of the gold favorites along with, among others, Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic.

Sinner recently also withdrew from the Swedish Open in Båstad, where he was the big poster name along with Rafael Nadal – then because he needed to rest after an intense year.

The 22-year-old became world number one for the first time when he reached the semifinals in the French Championships in June. In January, he won the Australian Open, his first Grand Slam title.

The OS tennis tournament starts on Saturday.
