Heavy rainfall has caused over 200 crocodiles to enter urban areas in Mexico.
According to authorities in the state of Tamaulipas in northern Mexico, the rain has led to higher water levels, which has caused the crocodiles to crawl into, among other places, the cities of Ciudad Madero and Altamira. Since the tropical storm Alberto hit the region in June, a large number of crocodiles have been caught and relocated from densely populated areas.
The problem caused a stir on social media this week when images of tied-up crocodiles circulated. And residents of the cities can expect more reptile visits in the future, according to the authorities. As the water recedes from flooded streets and drainage channels, more crocodiles are expected to be spotted.
Crocodiles are a protected species in Mexico. Attacks on humans are rare, but have occurred.
